Fossils are rarely the direct descendants of any modern species (that&#039;s just statistically unlikely, given how rare fossilization is and how many lines go extinct compared to the few that survive into the future), but they don&#039;t really need to be: they still tell us a great deal about when and where various groups of traits arose and in what relation to other species.

This particular fossil does have things in it more characteristic of the lines that led to human beings than that which went on to become modern lemurs: nails instead of claws, the talus bone, etc.</description>

How is this anything but a variation on the modern lemur? If anything, it’s just more of the same from the primate family.

		<description>If they only said instead that it could be closely RELATED to common ancestors of modern humans, then people wouldn&#039;t get as confused about what the fossil&#039;s real significance is (without overstating it and thus making the more complicated explanation seem like backtracking).</description>
